Whose heart is deaf? He who frames the terms of the argument is only listening to the echoes of his own non-hearing, right? Is this what De Mann meant by the violence of language?
Most blindness is only partial and well-intentioned at that--but the harm it does is still incalculable.
Whoops, it's Paul de Man who talks about the violence of conceptual totalization, not another critic with the similar name "Mann."
