An "us" versus "them" understanding of human relationships is bound to redound to problems of the spiritually immature kind, if not internecine warfare. I still find the gnostic view of a monumental battle between good and evil intuitively compelling though. One of my Buddhist-poet friends taught me the intelligent answer to hatred is non-attachment.
